WHat type of air filter do I need?

A common question we get from customers is: “What type of air filter should I use for my system?”

Many customers are opting for the pleated air filters due to their higher MERV rating (the MERV rating signifies the filters effectiveness at capturing airborne particles and contaminants) and the fact that many have at least a 3-month life span, as opposed to the traditional “cheap” filters that need to be changed roughly every 30 days.

To achieve a higher MERV rating, pleated filters tend to be made from a denser material, which can significantly restrict air flow causing your system to work harder and longer to get the air it needs to operate efficiently, which can put strain on components and increase your power bill. Pleated filters are also generally 3 times the cost of a traditional filter.

In an optimal environment—a system that has plenty of adequate return air—pleated filters become an option. But in our experience, using a standard air filter and keeping it changed monthly is the best choice for most of our customers. They’re cheaper, they work, and they allow your system to “breathe” and work efficiently.
